Mabe Earrings

An Introduction to Australian Pearl Divers

A Mabe pearl is a worked and assembled blister pearl (attached to the shell). It is typically of hemispherical shape, and is grown against the inside of the oyster's shell, rather than within its tissue. Small blister pearls are commonly found in nature. Mabe Pearl has been used throughout history as a gemstone for use in Earrings as it can be more perfectly matched into pairs than many of the round earring gems.

Technical Specifications

Genuine natural cultured Pearl. An organic gem produced as calcareous concretions within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk or conulariid. Mother-of-Pearl or nacre is the naturally occurring lustrous layer that lines mollusc shell oysters in the family Pteriidae and freshwater mussels in the families Unionidae and Margaritiferidae. The "mabe" (irregular) Pearl is grown through the insertion of an implant, under a flap of the mantle and next to the mother-of-Pearl interior of the shell.  Composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mainly aragonite or a mixture of aragonite and conchiolin calcite “nacre” in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. Nacreous and iridescent and guaranteed to be free of plastics, synthetic materials, dyes or artificial colours.

All Australian Pearl Divers Mabe Pearls come with an international lifetime guarantee and warranty and are guaranteed to be free of dyes, bleaches, chemical treatments and absolutely free of synthetic materials!

I sat down with Matt & Angelina at AOC to "look" only (HA) at some opals. Angelina took the time to explain the various kinds and asked what kind I liked and what my budget was. She brought out 4 trays for me to look at. I ended up buying a boulder opal (the most rare). Her co-worker Matt came over and he gave us a great price. I was so happy with the buying experience I asked to see a 3 strand set of elegant pearls. Again, they gave me a great price and threw in a bottle of wine for my husband to take to the hotel to soften the blow. I also saw an inexpensive pearl necklace just for fun...I bought that too and they threw in ANOTHER bottle of wine for my husband. We all had so much fun and laughed a lot in that shop. What great people. Would highly recommend this store. Please note it is NOT a fancy boutique or shop. This is a cut rate, bare bones "workshop" where retail opal and pearl buyers come to buy products for their fancy stores and then turn around and sell them to their customers at a mark-up. In fact I saw the gal that ran the opal display/shop on the QM2 picking up stock for the ship. I priced the opals on the ship and going direct to AOC is the way to go if you have the time. This is no frills but great prices

We visited opal cutters pitt street sydney and were looked after Marjan Tanashchev. We are very impressed by the information given to us and service provided by him. It made our purchase decision a breeze. I would recommend Marjan and his showroom to anyone searching for an insightful and enjoyable jewelery experience.

I stopped by Australian Opal Cutters and had excellent service. The service was fantastic, and everybody there was so friendly. I'm excited about my new opals!

Me and my mother went there on a whim and it turned out to be one of the highlights of her visit in Sydney. The guy we spoke to was very friendly and knowledgeable furthermore he did not push any sales just helped us with what we were interested in also showed us some mega expensive items which was fun. I learnt loads about opals! As we had a coupon from a guide book we were given two free necklaces as well.
